Introduce Yourself :: Knitting has made a comeback!

Subject: Knitting has made a comeback!
In today’s tough economic climate, people are now going back to traditional crafts,
not only as a hobby, but also in an effort to save money, yet still have quality goods
as an end product. This is why knitting is making such an incredible come back.
Many people who learned to knit when they were children, may not have picked up a
pattern and a pair of needles in over thirty years, but they are now turning back to the
skill they once learned, because of the range of yarns and colours available to them.
Today’s products offer qualities that make the mind spin. Bamboo, cashmere, silk
soya but to mention a few! And with patterns both English and Continental, easily
accessible in both the shops and online, it is no wonder that people are eager to get out
their old pins and get cracking!
There is also a great deal of people wanting to learn to knit, ranging from new
mothers and new grandparents, to school children. A great way to begin learning the
craft for children is using a French knitting Doll. It helps to teach them coordination
and they are able to produce their very first scarf (albeit Barbie sized!) before moving
on to more advanced projects.
Knitting has seen such a come back due to the number of celebrities who have taken
up knitting as a pastime, such as Julia Roberts and Sarah Jessica Parker and even
Audrey Hepburn was an avid knitter.
The modern knitting pattern now offers the latest trends, with patterns for leg warmers
and cowls and beautiful ponchos and knitwear regularly gracing the catwalks with
stunning designs from designers such as Mulberry and Nicole Farhi.
The Wool and Bead Studio cater for all levels of knitters and crocheters and are
proud to have taught many people how to knit and crochet and have watched their
progression grow, starting from simple scarves and blankets to intricate patterns for
coats, jumpers and baby garments. They have provided ongoing tuition and coaching
after the initial lesson and are dedicated to helping customers achieve their goals
using a one to one approach..
Another development from The Wool and Bead Studio is their Mums n’ Babies
knitting group, which has been running since last summer and is open to knitters of
all levels, who can come with their baby or toddler and socialise and knit or start from
scratch .
The once popular art form that allowed newly born babies to be delicately wrapped
in soft wool is making a tremendous come back. We at the Wool and Bead Studio are
proud to be keeping the art alive !

Yes, the instructions are very basic, but you are to do this in the round.
So CO 6 (3 each to 2dpns, or 2 each to 3dpns) and knit away.

First couple rows will be tight/tough, but after that first kfb round it should get easier.

I'm trying to do this pattern, and when I got to "kfb around", I wasn't really sure what to do. I understand what "kfb" is, but what does it mean by around? Do I need double pointed needles for this? And even if I did, how would I use it?

Sounds like I'm on the right track then, the pattern did not specify circular needles so I wondered if I was misinterpreting. I'll try again using circulars.
Much appreciated

TROUBLE FROM HERE With larger needles (3mm) pick up and knit 21 sts on right side of work along the right edge, k over the 49 sts, but bind off the border sts at both edges, and pick up and knit 21 sts along the left edge. On wrong side of work pearl over 89 sts now on the needle then work Rows 1 to 41 of pattern 3 back and forth ...

Pick up 21 sts, along right edge. BO 1 edge stitch. Knit 47. BO 1 edge stitch. Pick up 21 stitches down left edge. - end with 89sts on needle.

You will likely need to use a circular needle or dpns until you get a few rows along and the piece is able to bend/hang from the needles again.

9. Knit the entire row.

"Repeat from *" means just what it says. If you notice there was a * at the start of lines 8, 10 and 12. When you hit the end of that line you go back and repeat from the *.

So...
10. *SSK, k2tog, k2tog, repeat from *
means
10. SSK, k2tog, k2tog, SSK, k2tog, k2tog, SSK, k2tog, k2tog... till you run out of stitches.

Hi,
I need help understanding this pattern for a beanie. I have attached a photo of my knitting so far and the pattern is:

Quote:

With smaller needles (2.5mm) cast on 5 sts for back of neck. Work in garter st but pearl the centre st on wrong side of work and on right side of work place a yo before and after this centre st. K the yo's on wrong side of work. When there are 49 sts on the needle, work a wrong side of work then cut yarn.

This seems to me to mean pick up along the edge of the triangle shape starting at bottom right (where neck was cast on with 5 sts), then knit across 49 sts on needle and continue around 2nd sharp angle of triangle shape - which leaves the knitting too tight, almost full circle on a straight needle - impossible to knit!

Where should I start from when picking up first 21 sts and what does bind off border sts mean?

Can anyone help - if it makes any sense?

thanks
