Hi!
I am a beginner knitter; learned from Youtube videos mostly. The one thing I've had trouble with is trying to knit with more than one color. I know there is the intarsia and Fair Isle (which I really don't like at all) methods. But the instructions I find are really confusing. They start in the middle of the piece and every time I've tried to do it myself I end up with separate blocks of color.
I don't want to do anything super complicated, just stripes on a scarf. Initially, I wanted a black scarf with two thin blue stripes down the length of it but I'll settle for horizontal stripes if that's too difficult.
I feel like it's probably really easy but I'm missing something obvious.

Hi there. Just in case you haven't already gotten the help you need, I will try my best to help out.
When you are switching colours, you want to make sure the two colours 'connect' with each other. For instance, when doing a knit row - when you have finished knitting with colour one, you would be letting go of that yarn, and it will be hanging down the backside of the work. You do not want to simply pick up the next colour and start knitting. This will result in what you have described as basically 2 separate pieces of knitting. When you pick up the second colour, what you can do is put your fingers (right hand) under the first colour, grab the second colour and bring it under and to the right of the first colour. Now bring it up and start knitting. This action will cause the 2 colours to be linked together at the join and should give you 1 piece of knitting.
