My friend is making a scarf in stockinette with reverse stockinette on the first 2 and last 2 stitches. For some reason this leaves a nicer looking border on one edge, but a different looking border on the other edge. Why does it do this and is there a way to make it look nice on both edges?

Hi there. If your friend is making a reverse stocking stitch border on a scarf, I think the scarf sides will curl. To make flat scarf borders, it's better to use garter stitch edges, knitting the first and last stitches at the beginning and end of every row. Whenever I've done this, both edges have looked the same. The number of stitches to be used for the garter stitching depends on how wide she wants the border to be.

Good luck to your friend. Smile Lorraine in Calgary.
